A 22-year-old Wilmington man was killed this weekend in a violent car accident in Greenville. State Police report that the accident occurred Sunday at approximately 2 a.m., on Kennett Pike, immediately north of Brook Valley Road. WGMD reports that the accident happened when the 22-year-old driver missed a curve on the road as he traveled Southbound on Kennett Pike. The man drove his 2003 Infiniti onto the right hand shoulder and then over-corrected the vehicle.
The Infiniti swung to the left where it hit a low lying center median and a road sign. The vehicle then sailed back onto the right shoulder and struck a metal light pole.
Upon striking the pole, the vehicle became airborne, flipped onto its roof, and flew into a fence before landing in a creek bed. The driver was killed and a 23-year-old Newark woman was critically injured.
The woman was able to crawl out of the vehicle. She was discovered by emergency crews and rushed to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition with head and leg injuries, their Modesto car accident lawyer reports.
The 22-year-old driver was wearing a seatbelt and trapped in the vehicle under water. Paramedics unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the man, who was in cardiac arrest, while en route to Christiana Hospital. The man was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash, and it is unknown whether alcohol was also a contributing factor. A medical examiner has planned an autopsy for the 22-year-old to determine his exact cause of death.
